Northport Motorcyclist Injured by Car; Driver Accused of DWI, Fleeing Scene

Suffolk County Police arrested a man Wednesday and accused him of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a crash that seriously injured a motorcyclist in Shirley.

Robert Engel was operating a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle north on the William Floyd Parkway, near Lawrence Road, when he was struck from behind by a 2012 Toyota sedan being driven by Thomas Dudley. The crash occurred about 5:50 p.m. Engel, 52, of Northport, was transported via Shirley Ambulance to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

Dudley fled the scene but was found a short time later and arrested by Seventh Precinct officers, the department said.

Dudley, 36, of Mastic Beach was charged with DWI and Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Serious Physical Injury. He  is scheduled to be arraigned at First Court in Central Islip on Thursday.

  1. Sadly, this is my brother. He was not just hit, but literally run over. He sustained very serious injuries. He was discharged from a hospital in Manhattan and transferred to a subacute rehab/nursing facility. Since then he was transferred to a hospital twice and has tested positive for Covid THREE times since the beginning of February. He is now in another facility. My brother is an amazing guitarist who, along with his band, put out a few albums. His true passion was playing guitar. My brother was also an avid NY Rangers and Yankee fan and a great hockey player AND golf player.
He is now a quadriplegic and I can only ask for prayers for him so that, if there can be a miracle, he will be able to hold a guitar and play again.
My brother is full of life and I will be holding a fundraiser in the very near future as I cannot bear to even think of him living in a nursing home.

I would like to hear of his progress and about the fund raiser you are having.
      Sending healing prayers.
