The Northport school board has scheduled a special meeting Thursday to make a decision on the proposed closings of two schools.
Declining enrollment and the aging of some buildings has led the district to propose closing Bellerose Avenue and Dickinson Avenue schools, a proposal hotly contested by some parents.
The meeting, set for 7 p.m., will be conducted both in person and on Zoom.
Because of the Covid-19 epidemic, up to 100 people will be permitted to attend the meeting in person; social distancing and masks will be required of all those who attend, the district announcement said.
New Digital Newspaper in the Village
A new digital newspaper has launched in Northport.
Crisply designed, the Northport Journal is tackling a variety of local news topics, from federal flood assistance for the village to school district news. It is offering a subscription discount until late May.
Trustee Stepping Down
Mercy Smith is resigning as a Northport Village trustee. She said at a meeting earlier this week that her trustee role would conflict with another job she is taking, but didn’t identify the new job.
The weekly newspaper the Northport Observer reported that she is in line to become executive director of the Suffolk County Campaign Finance Board, which recently received staff funding from the Suffolk County Legislature. She was most recently re-elected to the board in September, in an election postponed because of the Covid-19 epidemic.
Smith is expected to resign by the end of May and said she would soon announce her new position.
