Nov.6 Countdown: Marcellino Petition, Candidate Nights

State Sen. Carl Marcellino is opposing a proposed increase in fares on the Long Island Rail Road.

The Republican, who represents the 5th state Senate district, said, “The LIRR just logged its worst year for on-time performance in two decades. Earlier this year a State Comptroller’s audit found during a two-month period thousands of trains were cancelled, late or delayed.

“Adding to the frustration and burden of beleaguered LIRR commuters the MTA still plans to go ahead with another fare hike. It is unconscionable, to keep asking commuters to pay more for service that is getting worse.”

The petition opposes fares until service improves.

The South Huntington-Huntington Station Civic Association will sponsor a candidates night  on Sept.27.

Candidates will be on stage starting at 7 p.m. at the South Huntington Public Library.

League of Women Voters Forum

The League of Women Voters of Huntington is also sponsoring a candidates night on Oct. 22 at the Harborfields Public Library. The session will run from 7 to 9 p.m.

All candidates on the ballot will be invited to participate, and will focus on Town Board and Receiver of Taxes candidates.

Attendees wishing to ask questions may submit them in writing, only on cards supplied at the event.

Ahead of the forum, League of Women Voters of Huntington will conduct a Take Action Workshop from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., also at Harborfields Public Library. The League will explain how to weigh campaign, news, and research information in deciding which candidate will best represent residents on important issues. Consistent with the League’s nonpartisan policy, no aspect of the training will support or oppose a candidate for office or a political party.

Seating is limited but registration is open to everyone.
