NY Sending 1,000 National Guardsmen to Washington

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo agreed to send 1,000 New York National Guardsmen to Washington, D.C., he said Wednesday.

The U.S. National Guard requested the soldiers to help with the transition of presidential power as president-elect Joe Biden takes office on Jan. 20.

“This deployment will not impact our state’s ongoing efforts to contain and combat the COVID virus,” Cuomo said. “For 244 years, the cornerstone of our democracy has been the peaceful transfer of power, and New York stands ready to help ensure the will of the American people is carried out, safely and decisively. God bless our brave men and women in uniform, and God bless the United States of America.”

Cuomo did not immediately identify which units would be deployed to the nation’s capital.
