NY Sending More Guardsmen to Washington

The state is sending another 250 members of the National Guard to help provide security at the inauguration of  president-elect Joe Biden next week in Washington, D.C.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo dispatched 1,000 members of the Guard last week, at the request of the U.S. National Guard after the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

“At the request of the Secretary of the Army and the National Guard General, I am deploying 250 members of the New York National Guard to Washington, D.C. to support the security efforts surrounding Inauguration Day and to aid and facilitate the peaceful transition of presidential power. This deployment supplements the 1,000 members of the New York National Guard we deployed to the nation’s capital last week in the wake of the attempted coup, and will not impact our state’s ongoing efforts to combat the COVID virus. The peaceful transfer of power is central to our democracy, and New York State will do everything in our power to help protect that basic American right. On behalf of the family of New York, I am grateful to the brave men and women in uniform who keep us safe.”
