Officials Caution Residents Against Drunk, Distracted Driving

Huntington officials reminded residents Monday to drive safely by avoiding drunken or distracted driving.

Town Councilman Mark Cuthbertson, Supervisor Chad Lupinacci, Town Councilman Ed Smyth, Suffolk Police Second Precinct commander William Scrima and friends and relatives of a woman killed by a drunk driver in 2016 urged drivers to avoid bringing a tragedy to themselves or others.

Because of the holiday season, and a possible temptation to use alcohol to excess because of the Covid-19 epidemic, authorities are concerned  about residents’ safety.

“We implore you to think before you drink, make a plan, do not get behind the wheel of a car,” Cuthbertson said.

Lupinacci said, “We are reminding our residents to celebrate the holiday responsibly and safely. This year, we’ve already been through so much and there’s been so much tragedy and loss. Don’t pile that on with thoughlessness.”

The friends and family of Karen Holden, who was killed when a drunk driver hit her car at the intersection of Jericho Turnpike and Route 110,  served to remind people of the personal cost of bad decision-making.

Gershow Recycling donated a vehicle damaged in a crash to show the hazards of drunken driving.
