The man who shot and killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., four years ago was spared the death penalty Thursday and instead sentenced to multiple life terms.
Nikolas Cruz was sentenced to life without parole.
One of his victims was Scott Beigel, a teacher, whose family lives in Dix Hills. His mother, Linda Beigel Schulman, has becoming a leading advocate for gun control since his murder.
East Northport native Fred Guttenberg, who moved to Florida several years ago, also lost a child, daughter Jaime, a Parkland student.
So far it doesn’t sound like Nikolas Cruz will be sentenced to death for killing 17 students and staff in Parkland, FL.
The jury gave him life in prison for the first 6 counts, including for Alyssa Alhadeff.
