Pelosi Appoints Suozzi to Commission on China

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi recently appointed U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi to the Congressional-Executive Commission on China.

The commission was decided on May 8 and consists of members from both parties from the House and the Senate. It was created in 2000 with the legislative mandate to monitor human rights and the development of the rule of law in China.

“I want to thank Speaker Pelosi for appointing me to this Commission and for her continued leadership on issues related to human rights abuses by the Chinese government,” said Suozzi.

He added that “many Americans have believed that with the increased economic integration and exposure to our system of democracy, the Chinese government would someday adopt some of our fundamental values” since Nixon visited the country in the 70s.

“This has clearly not happened,” he added. “Not only does the Chinese government reject any real steps toward democracy, continue its unfair trade practices, and cheat by subsidizing its entire economic system, but it also continually violates human rights. America must hold the Chinese Government accountable for its repression and active disregard for international law.”

Last week,  Suozzi participated in his first official hearing as a commissioner. The hearing focused on the challenges faced by Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement.
