Police to Unveil Vehicle Named in Honor of Fallen Marine

Suffolk County police will unveil a vehicle Saturday named for U.S. Marine Cpl. Christopher Scherer, who was killed in Iraq in 2007.

Chief of Department Stuart Cameron will participate in the unveiling, set for 2 p.m. at the East Northport Fire Department headquarters, 1 Ninth Ave., East Northport.

The department received the vehicle, a multi-purpose all-wheel drive truck, through the federal military surplus equipment program. It will be used by the department and the county rescue task force to move materials as needed and during events.

Scherer grew up in East Northport and was 21 years old when he was killed.  The department previously dedicated military surplus vehicles, a Humvee in honor of Lt. Michael J. Murphy, who was killed in action on June 28, 2005, and an emergency rescue vehicle to Air National Guard Master Sgt. Christopher Raguso, who was killed in a helicopter crash in Iraq on March 15, 2018.

Also participating in the ceremony will be Scherer’s parents, Thomas and Janet, and Thomas Ronayne, director of the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency.
