Most government offices, including Huntington Town Hall, are closed Monday in honor of Presidents Day. The financial markets, most banks and some business offices are closed for the federal holiday, while students take the week off for winter break. Mail delivery is also canceled for the day.
Trash pickup is canceled Monday; those on a Monday/Thursday schedule can use the second day for pickup, while the rest of the sanitation schedule remains the same.
The holiday began in 1971, with roots in Washington’s Birthday, which is Feb. 22. It falls on the third Monday of February. Though it is a federal holiday, it is celebrated in different ways around the country and is sometimes called Washington and Lincoln Day or just Washington’s Birthday.
