PSEG to Upgrade Grid in Parts of Northport, Huntington, Greenlawn

PSEG Long Island announced plans Friday to upgrade service in three sections of Huntington, designed to improve the reliability of power circuits.

The projects, which will begin next week, will lead to “some localized, intentional, short-duration power outages related to these projects. All affected customers will be notified in advance of any planned power outage,” PSEG said Friday.

Lasting about seven months, the project will use PSEG Long Island-licensed and approved contractors to replace existing electrical wires, install  new and more durable poles and installing or replacing switching equipment. These infrastructure upgrades will help reduce the number of customers affected by an outage, the utility said.

“Outstanding electric reliability is one of PSEG Long Island’s top priorities,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “These infrastructure improvement projects in Huntington, Northport and Greenlawn are among hundreds of FEMA-funded upgrades we have been making at no additional cost to our customers.”

This project is funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Assistance Program, which was established to harden electrical distribution infrastructure against future storm damage and help restore power more quickly. In 2014, more than $729 million of federal recovery funds were secured for the Long Island Power Authority via an agreement between Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and the FEMA, under the FEMA 406 Mitigation Program.
