PSEG Steps In to Protect Centerport’s Eagles

A dedicated band of eagle watchers led to the installation of  special insulation to protect the birds flying around Mill Pond in Centerport.

Last week, PSEG notified the group, which has been closely following the family of four birds at Bald Eagles of Centerport on Facebook,  that it had installed the special insulation after members of the page grew concerned that the young eagles in the family could be electrocuted as they practiced landing on utility poles.

Bruce Adams notified Suffolk Legislator William “Doc” Spencer of the concerns, and the legislator reached out to PSEG.

“I commend your advocacy on behalf of Long Island’s bald eagle population,” LIPA CEO Thomas Falcone wrote to Adams.

On Friday, Spencer  joined Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci,  Dan Wickstrom  of PSEG Long Island and Adams, the chair of the Committee to Protect Centerport’s Bald Eagles, to recognize the  community effort to protect the eagles.

Dubbed the Commodore and Mrs. Vanderbilt, the pair are parents to two eaglets who have both fledged in recent days.

“PSEG Long Island prides itself on being a good steward of the environment,” said Patrick Hession, electric division manager, PSEG Long Island. “We were excited to hear that these majestic birds were raising their young here on Long Island, and we are proud to help ensure the next generation of our national bird thrives by installing protective equipment.”

“I was happy to play a role in the community effort to protect the eaglets that thousands of residents have come to treasure.  I thank PSEG Long Island for their timely response to our requests, and thank you to the respectful followers of the birds who brought the unsafe situation to our attention,” Spencer said.

“Mill Pond is one of the prettiest areas in Huntington, this is a popular birdwatching site,” said Lupinacci. “The Town is grateful to PSEG for the work they have done to protect the bald eagles – our new local celebrities – in the trees and waters off of Centerport.”

The Facebook page, administered by Rob Schwartz, has grown to more than 7,000 members who enthusiastically post photos and discuss the eaglets’ progress.
