Marine Cpl. Christopher Scherer was remembered in a ceremony Friday night in East Northport, as were thousands of others killed in wars in recent years.
The corporal’s father, Tim Scherer, presided over the reading of names of all those Americans killed in Afghanistan and Iraq as residents, friends and runners gathered ahead of Saturday’s I Did the Grid race honoring the corporal, who was killed in Iraq in 2007.
Participants read aloud the names of the service members that were printed on sheets of paper, each containing a different list. Afterward, participants helped place hundreds of small American flags on the field at Pulaski Road Elementary School.
The Scherer race kicks off the Suffolk County Veterans Run Series.
