Rent Assistance Available for Tenants Affected by Covid-19 Epidemic

The town of Huntington is inviting tenants to apply for assistance if they are struggling to pay their rent or utilities because of the Covid-19 epidemic.

Huntington has received $5.9 million under the Emergency Rental Assistance Program. Low or moderate-income tenants, not property owners, are eligible to apply but if a grant is approved, funds are paid to the landlords or utility companies.

If approved, applicants could receive:

    • Up  to 12 months of rental arrears payments accrued on or after March 13, 2020
    • Up to 3 months of additional rental assistance if a household spends 30 or more percent of their gross monthly to pay rent.
    • Up to 12 months of electric or gas utility arrears payments.

Applications are filled out by tenants. Landlords have to verify the amount of rent in arrears, provide a copy of the lease, and waive late fees due on the arrears, among requirements.

Housing Help is working with the town on the program. Call 1-631-754-0373 for assistance.
