The Cinema Arts Centre of Huntington has announced its October schedule of events, including Halloween-themed film screenings,screenings of cult favorites from VHS, film and discussion programs, celebrity appearances, family friendly films and influential silent films.

Seventeen-year-old high school senior Billy Lynch (Jimmy McNichol) was raised by his maternal aunt, Cheryl Roberts (Susan Tyrrell), with who he has lived since the age of three, when his parents died in a tragic accident. As never married Aunt Cheryl has not dated over that time, it has been only her and Billy in the big, old house next to the woods. Billy hopes to get a basketball scholarship to the University of Denver, where his girlfriend of one year, Julie Linden (Julia Duffy), will be attending. Aunt Cheryl, in her possessiveness of Billy, doesn’t let Julie into the house and doesn’t want Billy to go away to college. What those around her don’t know is that Cheryl is deranged and will do whatever it takes to keep Billy all to herself. What Billy also does not know is that there is an unknown third in his and Aunt Cheryl’s relationship, that third who is either the cause of or has exacerbated her derangement. Aunt Cheryl’s actions lead to Billy being implicated in a murder and Billy’s plea of innocence is not helped by the narrow-mindedness of the lead police detective, hyper-masculine Lieutenant Joe Carlson (Bo Svenson). The Cinema Arts Centre pays tribute to legendary filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard (1930-2022), with a big screen showing of Alphaville, one of his most playful and influential works. This classic of the French New Wave cinema is a dazzling amalgam of film noir and science fiction. Lemmy Caution (Eddie Constantine), a hero Godard borrowed from a series of French adventure films, travels from the Outlands to Alphaville, the becalmed territory ruled by the computer Alpha 60 where “No one has ever lived in the past, no one will ever live in the future, the present is the form of all life.” His mission is to eliminate Professor Von Braun, the creator of the almost-human Alpha 60. When Caution meets the scientist’s beautiful daughter Natasha (Anna Karina), the forbidden, illogical power of love opens the path to liberation. Without any flashy special effects, Godard used the modernist buildings of 1960s Paris to dazzlingly evoke the city of the future. Nosferatu is most certainly the most important horror film of the silent era and one of the first vampire movies — though it was almost completely lost when Bram Stoker‘s widow sued the filmmakers for copyright infringement and most of the prints of the movie were destroyed. Nosferatu tells the story of Hutter and Ellen, a couple from the village of Wisborg. Hutter travels to Transylvania to sell a piece of property in Wisborg to Count Orlok. Hutter stays in Orlok’s castle only to learn that the Count is a vampire. Orlok purchases a house next to Hutter’s, locks Hutter in the castle and travels to Wisborg. On the way, he manages to possess Hutter’s employer and Ellen and strike the village with an outbreak of the plague. Hutter rushes home to stop him before it’s too late.
Fans, theaters and media have praised The Invincible Czars’ soundtrack for making the near century-old movie “actually scary” for modern day audiences since they debuted it in 2015. the band has performed well over 100 times across the US and Canada. In 2021, they updated the soundtrack to include drums and a little more rock edge while retaining their signature delicate creepiness.Using a mix of acoustic and electric instruments helped. Violin, glockenspiel, organ, flute, bass clarinet, voices and vocals, music box, loops, electric guitar, bass, piano and percussion all play prominent roles in the score and are a sight to behold when performed live by only four or five players! The monthly Hard Luck Cafe concert series co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington and the Cinema Arts Centre in the Cinema’s Sky Room (423 Park Avenue, Huntington) resumes on Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 7-10 p.m. and will take place on the third Wednesday of each month.
October’s featured act is No Fuss and Feathers — the “heck-of-a-good-time” collaboration hatched by Catherine Miles & Jay Mafale, Karyn Oliver, and Carolann Solebello. Shaken or stirred, NFF serves up a dynamic, cohesive cocktail of delicious harmonies, infectious rhythm, and spontaneous hilarity — with award-winning songwriting always present on stage. Individually, the four are nationally touring performers who have charted at the top of folk and Americana radio and appeared at some of the nation’s most respected music festivals. Collectively, they are an incorrigible bunch of musical co-conspirators bent on giving their audience an unforgettable show.
