Safety Advice: Be Careful With Cleaning Products and ‘Flushable’ Items

A reminder from the state Department of Environmental Conservation to not flush certain products down the toilet.

The reminder includes :

  • diapers
  • baby wipes
  • disinfectant wipes
  • personal hygiene products
  • any paper products other than toilet paper (e.g., paper towels, facial tissues, paper napkins)

Flushing them can damage sewer systems, wastewater treatment and private systems, even when they are labeled as flushable. Repairs can be costly.

Other warnings:

Don’t use disinfectants internally

A lot of cleaning products contain ammonia. Be careful with ammonia products; don’t mix with bleach
