Voters in the South Huntington and Huntington school districts passed their school budgets Tuesday night and favored incumbents as they elected three trustees each to their Boards of Education.
In Huntington, incumbents Christine Biernacki and Thomas DiGiacomo were re-elected, while Lynda Tine-D’anna beat Michele Deegan and Alvin White. Emily Rogan did not run for re-election.
The budget of $129,812,991 passed easily, 1,215-314. Voters also approved two propositions for the district, one to spend up to $7.51 million from the capital reserve fund to cover such work as construction of security vestibules; roof replacement; replacement of two boilers; and replacement of tiles in an instruction room and bathrooms. A second proposition authorizes the district to create a new $1.5 million 2018 Building Improvement Fund for repairs and reconstruction as needed to the high school’s turf athletic field.
In South Huntington, incumbents Michele R. DeGaetano, Linda O. LaCara and Edward J. Nitkewicz defeated challenger Solange Rich.
South Huntington’s budget of $170,505,675 passed.
In addition to the budget and trustee decisions, South Huntington voters approved two proposals:
The purchase of a plot of land at 441 Oakwood Road next to Stimson Middle School. The purchase of the land is intended to improve safety issues caused by insufficient parking and to provide additional athletic space. The second is for the approval for the district to sell an unused plot of land on Depot Road, which will be used to offset the cost of the Oakwood Road property.
