School Notes: Elwood, HHS, Walt Whitman, and More

Harley Avenue Primary School Primary School Principal Mrs. Elissa Milan presented faculty members Michelle Kretz, Jose Alicea, Christian Haack, and Alexandria Harris to the board on Jan. 24, to commend them for their work on “Sensory City.”

The superhero-themed function was thought of by social worker Kretz and helps students develop their motor skills and refocus in the classroom. With the help of Alicea, Haack, and Harris, Kretz was able to turn her idea into a reality for the students.

The project’s timeline was originally extended to the end of school year, but was completed by Thanksgiving. “I’m so proud of this team,” Milan said. “Their dedication and focus in bringing our dreams of an extreme makeover, school edition, to a reality has been an incredible journey and I know the Harley community is so grateful for all they’ve done.”

World Read Aloud Day at Fifth Avenue

Earlier this month, Fifth Avenue Elementary School celebrated World Read Aloud Day which focuses on the importance of reading aloud, sharing stories and understanding the idea of literacy as a human right.

Faculty began the day by putting on a special reader’s theatre performance of “A Bad Case of the Stripes.” Subsequently, the entire school engaged in reading activity where faculty and students stopped everything to read. An interactive and productive feat, faculty members were pleased with the outcome of the day, stressing the importance reading sessions with the children.

“Reading aloud to children every day can put them almost a year ahead of children who do not receive daily read-alouds,” said librarian, Andrea Ferrari. “And reading aloud not only helps develop literacy skills,” added librarian, Rosemary Becker, ”but also builds community and connects us to each other.”
