School Notes: Musicians Chosen for All-State; Master Teacher in Cold Spring Harbor

Four Northport High School students have been selected to perform in the String Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra and Treble Chorus at the NYSSMA All-State Festival in December.

The students – Alison Crosley, Maxwell DeBrino, Angelina Saccone and Juliana Tjornhom – were among the top students to perform a NYSSMA Level VI solo for a NYSSMA adjudicator last April. Out of more than 7,000 students statewide, only 900 were selected.

Recognizing Board Members at Half Hollow Hills

The New York State School Boards Association recognizes October 21-25 as School Board Recognition Week, which is a time to promote awareness and understanding of the important work performed by school board members.
The Half Hollow Hills Central School District of Huntington and Babylon is joining all public school districts across the state to celebrate School Board Recognition Week to honor local board members for their commitment to community and children.

The members serving Half Hollow Hills and their years of service are:

  • Eric Geringswald, President, serving since 2009
  • Betty DeSabato, Vice President, serving since 2011
  • Diana Acampora, Trustee, serving since 2011
  • Stephanie Gurin, Trustee, serving since 2015
  • David Kaston, Trustee, serving since 2012
  • Adam Kleinberg, Trustee, serving since 2015
  • Michael Prywes, Trustee, serving since 2017

Elwood Board Members, Teachers Honored

In honor of Board Recognition Week, Elwood Board of Education members were treated to a performance by John H. Glenn High School Chamber Orchestra last week.

Under the direction of Karen Gellert, the ensemble kicked off the meeting with a rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner.

 Board members received  black polo shirts with the words “Elwood Knights” embroidered above the pockets. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert thanked each of the board members for their work.

The board then honored 11 John H. Glenn High School faculty members as “Noble Knights.” Recipients included Susan Campo, Nicole Correia, Shannon Flores, Ilene Fucci, Nicole Gendjoian, Samantha Heuer, Tracy Ott, Joseph Pushee, Joanna Sepp, Diane Warren and Kristen Wertz. Each were nominated by a fellow colleague and received a certificate on behalf of Principal Carisa Burzynski, Bossert and the board of education.

Hills East Student Named to Anti-Bullying Task Force

Hills East junior Gianna Tantillo on being selected by County Legislator Tom Donnelly to serve as the 17th Legislative District representative on the Suffolk County Youth Anti-Bullying Task Force.

This new group meets regularly throughout the year to examine the issues of bullying and recommend programs and methods to combat bullying both in school and through social media or technology.

Master Teacher in Cold Spring Harbor

Sheila Mauriello has been selected to the NYS Master Teacher Program in partnership with the State University of New York and Math for America. This is one of the highest designations and honors a teacher can receive. It is a professional network of the state’s top outstanding public school educators dedicated to fostering professional growth for STEM learning, collaborating with educators across the state, and leading professional development sessions for other educators at the local, state and national level in order to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders. This year, the program accepted 228 educators across NY State, of which Sheila is among 90 from the Long Island Region. 

At CSH she teaches Inclusion Regents Earth Science, Regents Chemistry, AP Environmental Science and Advanced Science Research 1 at Cold Spring Harbor Jr/Sr High School. Mrs. Mauriello serves on the district’s Technology Committee, School Improvement Team, National Honor Society Committee, and is a co-advisor for the Junior Helpers Club. She is a member of the National Science Teachers Association, Science Teachers Association of NYS, International Society of Technology in Education, and National Earth Science Teachers Association.

Northport Student Named Hispanic Scholar

Northport High School senior Marcos Guerrero has been named a 2019-20 National Hispanic Scholar by College Board and Scholarship America.

Only 4,000 students out of 400,000 students who take the PSAT/NMSQT are selected for the program each year. Marcos earned a score of 1470 as a junior and was notified of his accomplishment upon entering his senior year in September.

After graduation, he plans to major in computer science – a passion that he has developed through the years as a member of the school’s Academy of Information Technology.
