An outbreak of Covid-19 amongst their opponents nearly benched the Huntington football team and the Blue Devils’ homecoming last weekend.
Huntington athletic director Jim Hoops was notified Friday afternoon that some members of the West Babylon team had tested positive. Shortly thereafter, the Eagles announced they had to cancel because of several other positive Covid-19 results.
That left Hoops scrambling to find another opponent. A colleague in Nassau County connected him with Long Beach, which was available and agreed to play the Saturday game on short notice.
Huntington beat the visitors in the non-conference game, 28-7.
Superintendent James W. Polansky talked with the Long Beach team, thanking them for agreeing to play, and helping save the Blue Devils’ homecoming weekend.
