Northport High School’s Environment Team and AP Environmental Science students broke ground on the school’s new Native Species Garden Initiative, designed to support the local ecosystem. Led by science teacher David LaMagna, the garden is being planted in the area surrounding the school’s greenhouse and will support districtwide classes.
“We’re trying to re-create a natural ecosystem and bring back all the sights, sounds and textures of Long Island, and from there, support ecosystems at large” LaMagna said. Students who enroll in the district’s new Long Island Native Ecology course, being offered this fall, will be designated to their own plot of land which they’ll work to develop as part of the larger garden.
The garden will eventually serve as an outdoor learning space, which not only high school science students can access but elementary and middle school classes can visit as well. LaMagna also sees the space as an opportunity for students across different disciplines to utilize; from art classes using the plants as sketching material to culinary classes learning about the benefits of homegrown gardens.

The Harborfields Board of Education recently received the School Board Service Award from SCOPE Education Services for their service to the community. The members were presented with an engraved plaque from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Rory Manning.
