Schools: New Athletic Directors; Construction Projects Underway

New athletic directors have been named by the Huntington and South Huntington school districts.

Huntington named James Hoops, who has worked for the district for more than 37 years, to succeed Georgia McCarthy, while South Huntington appointed David Barth, succeeding Dr. Jim Wright. Both Wright and McCarthy retired from their districts.

Hoops has been teaching physical education classes at Huntington High School and also writes news and information about the district for the website. He is also active in Moonjumpers, a charitable organization that assists children, veterans, families and others in need of support.

Barth previously served as athletic director in the East Rockaway school district,  and taught physical education and health.

Work Underway in Harborfields

Building upgrades and other projects are underway at several Harborfields schools, including Harborfields High School, Oldfield,  Lahey and Washington Drive.  Air conditioning is expected to be functioning in the buildings’ gyms by the end of August. In addition, security vestibules at the high school and middle school are progressing.  At Washington Drive Primary School, ground was broken for the play area in early July.

 

New Faces, Roles in South Huntington

As the start of the new school year approaches, several positions in the South Huntington school district have been filled by new people.

Among those filling new positions or new to the district are are: Kenneth Costa, named principal of Walt Whitman High School, former principal of Connetquot High School;  William Hender, Maplewood Intermediate School principal, previously Eastport Elementary School’s principal for grades 3-6; Dr. Gayle Steele, assistant to the superintendent for curriculum and instruction of elementary education K-6, formerly principal at Maplewood; John Murphy, former Whitman principal, now assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction; Dr. Marlee Rice,  the new assistant supervisor of data and information systems, formerly a special education teacher at Stimson.

 

Boys and Girls State Honorees

Four Walt Whitman High School students were honored recently for their participation in the Boys and Girls State government delegates program.

Owen Connolly, Jordan Henkel, Kevin Rankel and Liam Villanti, students at Walt Whitman High School, participated in the weeklong program to learn abut government.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) recently joined with the Greenlawn American Legion Post #1244 for the ceremony.

American Legion Sergeant at Arms Charlie Armstrong again served as post chairman of the program. Held virtually this year, Boys and Girls State delegates participated in mock legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement, assemblies and other group activities.
