Schools on Weeklong Break, Banks, Offices Closed Monday

Government offices will be closed Monday for the federal and state holiday of Washington’s Birthday. Most banks and libraries are also closed Monday, while nearly all schools are closed for a week for winter break.

LIRR trains will operate on a holiday schedule, with off-peak fares in effect all day.

The Huntington sanitation pickup schedule will be altered for those whose trash is normally picked up on Mondays and Thursdays. There is no pickup Monday but residents can put out more trash than usual on Thursday; Wednesday’s recycling pickup (paper products) is unchanged, as is the pickup for those on a Tuesday-Friday schedule.No yardwaste will be collected this week.

Commonly known as Presidents’ Day, the holiday is formally a federal and state day to celebrate the first American president’s birthday.

Several museums and other organizations have special events for children, including the Vanderbilt Planetarium, and the Whaling Museum.
