Schools: Pre-School Reading; Captains Named

Dawn Valle has been named director of math, science, technology and federal grants for the Elwood School District.

She had served since 2014 as assistant principal at Elwood Middle School. Valle previously worked as a principal for the New York City Department of Education, an assistant principal and math staff developer at the Math & Science Exploratory School, a math teacher and math department teacher leader at William Alexander Middle School, and a school and borough testing supervisor for the NewYork City Department of Education.

Valle earned her bachelor’s degree at the College of Staten Island of the City University of New York, her master’s degree in school leadership at Touro College, and her advance certification of district leadership from Dowling College.

New Assistant Principal

Julie Bilello was appointed as assistant principal at Elwood Middle School, replacing Dawn Valle, the district’s new director of math, science, technology and federal grants.
Bilello has worked as a special education teacher for the past 16 years, most
recently at Elwood Middle School, and previously in the Lynbrook and Plainview Old-Bethpage School Districts. During her career, she has taught every grade from first to eighth in various settings such as resource room, integrated co-teaching and special class.
A Deer Park resident, Bilello earned an associate’s degree in liberal arts from
Farmingdale State College, her bachelor’s degree in child study from St. Joseph’s College, a
master’s degree in education in literacy from Long Island University and a post-master’s
advanced graduate certificate in educational leadership from Stony Brook University.

Hispanic Student Recognition

Four Huntington High School seniors have been recognized as national College Board Hispanic Scholars.

Brian Bonilla, Erik Flores Reyes, Fiorella Benitez-Arevalo and Jennifer Escobar have excelled on College Board assessments as well as in their high school classrooms.

“This is simply an outstanding bunch who have worked extraordinarily hard in the classroom and who have taken advantage of so many opportunities during their years in Huntington,” Superintendent James W. Polansky said. “These young people are role models in every sense and surely destined for great things ahead.”

Free Story Time Registration

The South Huntington Union Free School District offeers a a free community story, song and craft playgroup for preschool age children.
The program meets for about two hours on Tuesdays throughout the school year. A certified South Huntington Union Free School District teacher, along with  high school students, will organize and supervise age-appropriate stories and activities for preschoolers. The group will meet on Tuesdays from 12:15 PM to 2:45 PM at Walt Whitman High School in room 230.
