Schools: Teacher Runs for Charity; Music Students PIcked for All-State

Northport Teacher Runs for a Cause

Norwood Avenue elementary school music teacher Maureen Edwards ran a very different race this year for the New York City marathon. Having been a runner for 17 years and running her first NYC marathon in 2017, Ms. Edwards has mastered the art of marathon running while raising money for a good cause in the process.

Harborfields Halloweening

In the week leading up to Halloween, Harborfields students were busy planting pumpkin seeds, packing goodie bags, designing monsters and dressing up as their favorite spooky characters.

At Washington Drive Primary School, elementary students participated in a “Pumpkin Seed Toss” during which grades K-2 planted or tossed “magic” pumpkin seeds onto the school’s pumpkin patch. The seeds magically grew into pumpkins overnight, allowing students to pick their own and decorate them for Halloween.

At Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, students in Marissa Hillebrand’s class created monsters using their knowledge of Google Slides. Students wrote about their creations and shared them with classmates.

This year, in lieu of the high school’s annual Safe Halloween event, interact club members made over 1,200 goodie bags of Halloween-themed toys to share with elementary students.

Trustees Recognized

The members of the Huntington school board were recognized by Huntington High School choir members.

Honored were trustees Christine Biernacki, Linda Tine-D’Anna, Tom DiGiacomo, Kelly Donovan, Bill Dwyer, Michelle Kustera and Xavier Palacios

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo proclaimed School Board Recognition Week as a way of honoring the thousands of trustees who “continually strive for improvement, excellence and progress in education.”

NYSSMA All-State

Three Harborfields High School students have been honored with NYSSMA All-State designations. The students — Ty Ellenbogen (Alto Saxophone Alternate, Instrumental Jazz), Olivia Freiberger (Soprano, Treble Chorus) and Angeline Miraglia (Alto, Mixed Chorus) — have been recognized for their outstanding achievements in their respective areas.

“While so many changes are taking place this year, it’s nice to see that NYSSMA will still be doing right by New York’s outstanding musicians and giving them an All-State experience to remember,” said K-12 Music Department Coordinator Daniel Bilawsky. “We congratulate these students, their families and their teachers.”
