Schools: What Commack, South Huntington Are Doing to Reopen

Commack schools will reopen, with younger students attending fulltime in-person classes, the district has announced.

Meantime, the South Huntington district have asked for an extension for submitting its plan, the superintendent, Dr. David Bennardo, said Monday.

The “Commack Model” divides elementary school students into two cohorts of students, who will switch places halfway through the day to complete lessons. Older students will attend in-person classes every other day.

A factsheet addresses such questions as whether students will have to wear masks throughout the day (“Students will be required to wear face coverings when not seated at their desks (i.e., hallways, restrooms, buses, common areas), and when they cannot maintain social distancing. Students may wear masks all day if they choose. However, every desk will have a clear protective shield.”)

Commack’s blueprint

South Huntington superintendent Dr. David Bennardo said Monday that the district, along with several others, had requested a five-day delay “in the hopes of being able to read through and study as many other district plans as possible and squeeze every last bit of best practice that someone else might be considering into our plans.”

Plans were submitted by most districts on Friday, with Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo expected to approve or disapprove them this week. Bennardo said the district hopes to submit the plan by Wednesday.
