Scooter Operator Killed in Collision in Melville

A driver operating a Vespa scooter was killed Wednesday night in a collision in Melville.

Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating the crash, which occurred just before 6:50 p.m. They said the crash occurred when a Dix Hills man northbound on Walt Whitman Road attempted to turn right into a driveway and was struck by the scooter, which was attempting to pass him on the right.

The driver of the Vespa was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow where he was pronounced dead. Identification is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured, police said.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
