Selfies, Socks, School Supplies: Young Professionals Take On Scavenger Hunt for a Good Cause

There was a boost of selfie-taking in Huntington Village on Thursday night. Thanks to clues crafted by the Huntington Chamber of Commerce, groups of young professionals combined team building, exercise, and Huntington knowledge to compete for the title of Scavenger Hunt Champion.

Teams began the evening by checking in at the Chamber Office on Main Street. They each dropped off donations of school supplies (which would fuel their point total, at one point per item) and received their first clue.

To earn points, team members had to take a group selfie at each clue’s resulting location. Bonus points could be added by completing special challenges (like taking selfie with the America’s Mattress sheep or with the unicorn head at Paper Doll Curiosity Shoppe) and making purchases at the scavenger hunt locations.

John’s Crazy Socks kicked off the scavenger hunt, with one team made up of men (Furious 6), and another made up of women (Mighty Morphin Sock Ranglers). A team from the YMCA began their hunt next, followed by Zimmerman Edelson Inc. An accident on the Long Island Expressway delayed the start time of the final team (self-declared “Team Too Late”), but since points were awarded based on successful selfies, school supplies, and proof of purchases from the scavenger hunt locations, speed was not a priority.

The scavenger hunt clues led the Young Professionals from the starting location at the Huntington Chamber of Commerce, to Digho, Black & Blue, Mac’s Steakhouse, Honu, and Babalu.

At Honu, the Zimmerman Edelson team received their point-boosting bill only to realize that a few of their drinks had been left off the receipt. The team flagged down the bartender and asked that the items be added to the charge — the bartender laughed as he said, “That’s a first!”

Brian Yudewitz, chairman of the Board of Directors, said, The scavenger hunt “really helps our local businesses, and brings in lots of school supplies.” He was right.

According to Courtney Bynoe, the Chamber’s associate executive director, purchases made by the teams totaled over $2,000, and school supply donations exceeded 300 items. All donated items will be put toward the Scott Martella 2018 “Supply Our Students” Drive, which was set up in memory of Scott Martella. Martella was a Young Professional who was killed in a car crash two years ago. He was dedicated to helping those less fortunate, and his family organized the supply drive in his honor.

The night concluded at Six Harbors Brewing Company, where teams mingled and final scores were tallied. In the end, the Mighty Morphin Sock Ranglers came out on top, (much to the third-placing Furious 6’s chagrin). The team was awarded with bragging rights, and the knowledge that they were in the Huntington-know!
