Dix Hills Water District Building to Be Named for Sheila Saks

The Huntington Town Board voted unanimously Tuesday to name the Dix Hills Water District’s administrative building after the late Sheila Saks, known for her fierce determination to protect the hamlet from overdevelopment.

Shepherded by Suffolk County Legislator Susan Berland, speaker after speaker rose to speak on Saks’ behalf and ask the board to vote for the naming. Saks, who died in July, was a past president and member of the House Beautiful Dix Hills Civic Association.

Berland referred to her as the “queen of multitasking, a dynamo,” deserving of having the building named for her.

State Assemblyman Andrew Raia said, “I have never met a person as passionate and persistent as Sheila Saks.”

And State Sen. Jim Gaughran, who met Saks shortly after his election to the Town Board in the 1980s, said, “She was a great civic leader,” noting her commitment to detail and commitment to getting things right.

A ceremony to name the building will be held at a later date.
