Shelf Life: A Book Group Guide for the New Year

Searching for places to discuss your favorite books, or wondering where you can discover new favorites? Here’s your Huntington Now guide to local book clubs and discussion groups.

Book Revue

  • Book Revue hosts a book group every third Wednesday of the month at 7 PM in the store. No registration is required; anyone can pre-read the selected book and join the meeting. Readers are responsible for obtaining their own book copies. The club is currently reading Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments in preparation for a meeting on January 15. 

Cold Spring Harbor Public Library 

  • Read it in Good Health
    • January 21 at 3 PM, the group will discuss Hedy’s Folly: The Life and Breakthrough of Hedy Lamarr, the Most Beautiful Woman in the World by Richard Rhodes. Books will be available at the circulation desk. All are welcome.
  • Morning Group
    • January 28 from at 11 AM, the group will discuss Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan. Books will be available at the circulation desk. All are welcome.

    • January 8 at 10:30 AM, the group will discuss Beartown by Fredrik Backman.
  • Evening Book Discussion
    • January 15 at 7 PM, the group will discuss Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah.
  • Donna Diamond Literary Gallery
    • January 13 from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM, the group will discuss The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

Half Hollow Hills Community Library

  • The Reader Selects
    • January 21 from 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM, the group will discuss The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire That Saved America by Timothy Egan.
  • Lunch Time Talk
    • January 10 from 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM, the group will meet at the Walt Whitman Birthplace to discuss The Girl They Left Behind by Roxanne Veletzos. 
  • Harborfields Public Library
    • From Cover to Cover Book Discussion with Donna Diamond 
      • January 15 from 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM, the group will discuss Inheritance by Adrianna Trigiani Copies of this book are available at the circulation desk. 
    • Just the Facts Nonfiction Book Discussion with Brad Silverman
      • January 23 at 7:00 PM, the group will discuss Spying on the South: An Odyssey Across the American Divide by Mark Kurlansky. Copies of this book are available at the circulation desk. 

Huntington Public Library

  • “Kiss Me, Kill Me” Mystery Book Discussion Group [Main Street branch]
    • The group is currently reading A Place Of Hiding by Elizabeth George in preparation for a meeting on Tuesday, January 10 at 2 PM. The program is open to all, though registration is required online or in person using code HMA165. Books available upon registration. Call or visit the library to register, using code HMA165. 
  • Next Chapter Book Club [Main Street branch]
    • Adults 18-years and older with developmental disabilities can meet for the Next Chapter book club. From 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM, members can gather in a relaxed setting to form friendships through reading aloud and talking about books. The program is open to all, though registration is required.   • Great Graphic Novels for Girls! (and Guys too!) [Main Street branch]
    •  January 27 at 7:00 PM, grades 4 and up. Join librarians Andrea & James for discussions about today’s best new graphic novels. Parents and family are encouraged to read along and join the conversation. This month the group will discuss  Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy by Rey Terciero and Bre Indigo.   • Geeks, Books & Coffee [Station branch]
    • January 27 at 6 PM, Join the library book club that discusses all things geek. Registration is required using code HSA274. Open to all. Books available upon registration. This month the group will discuss Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie. 
  • Who Is/Was Book Club [Main Street branch]
    • January 28 from 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM, grades 3-5. This month readers will discuss Who Was Leonardo Da Vinci? by Roberta Edwards. Register online or in person using code HMJ720. 
  • Pizza and a Book [Station branch]

Millennial Book Club

  • Millennials are welcome to join others every third Thursday of the month for a book discussion held at Book Revue. This month’s meeting is on January 16 at 7 PM. The group is reading The Supernova Era by Cixin Liu.
