Shelf Life: Huntington Library to Host Volunteer Fair

Huntington Public Library will host a Great Giveback Volunteer Fair on Oct. 19.

Those interested can speak with representatives from the Huntington Community First Aid Squad (HCFAS), Huntington Historical Society, Huntington Hospital, Island Harvest Food Bank, Literacy Suffolk, Volunteers for Wildlife, the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site, and more organizations that have volunteer opportunities.

“The fair offers an opportunity for adults and teens to meet with representatives from over 25 organizations,” said HPL head of adult programming, Lisa Gulino.  Those representatives will be available to discuss their work, as well as to let potential volunteers know what they are looking for. Each hosted table will have brochures, applications, and sign-up sheets. There will also be some event-wide giveaways.

This is the first time HPL is hosting a volunteer fair. When first announced, a great number of organizations expressed interest in participating. “More than our space could accommodate,” she said. Depending on the event’s turnout, the library will consider expanding and repeating it in the future.

The Great Giveback Volunteer Fair aims to bring people together. “The library wants to support these organizations in the good work they do and help community members discover the rewards of giving back,” said Gulino. “We hope to facilitate a match made in heaven!”

While the organizations represented at the fair are primarily looking for adult volunteers, several are looking for teens and children, too.

A directory of organizations participating in the Great Giveback Volunteer Fair is now available at the library and online through this link.
