This year, Harborfields, Huntington, and South Huntington public libraries are holding community events to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th – October 15th).
Harborfields Public Library will present a “Latinology” concert on Friday, September 27 at 7 PM. This concert will feature the nine-member band Latinology as they reimagine the classic sounds of Billy Joel, The Beatles, The Temptations, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Stevie Wonder with Latin rhythms. The group will also feature the salsa hits of Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, and others. The concert is scheduled to be performed on the library’s front lawn, but will be moved indoors should weather interfere. Rain or shine, “the show will go on,” said Susan Hope, Harborfields Library adult program, publicity, and art gallery coordinator. The event is free and open to all.
On Sunday, September 29, Huntington Public Library is hosting a concert to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month as well. Held in the community room of the library’s Huntington Station branch, the “Latinas!” concert will feature an array of Spanish, Latin American, and South American songs. Accompanied by Robert Boucher on piano and guitar, Yvette Malavet-Blum will perform songs from the repertoire of La Lupe, Rosa Paso, and other Latina singers. The concert runs from 2 PM – 3 PM. The South Huntington Public Library is celebrating Hispanic Heritage month with a five-week family story time program called, “Celebrando la Herencia Hispana con Noches de Cuentos y Leyendas.” Children ages three to eight years old are invited to join their families and friends to listen to stories and nursery rhymes read in Spanish, as well as participate in a craft. Led by youth services librarian Georgina Rivas-Martinez, this program found its funding through grant funding from the REFORMA Northeast Chapter. REFORMA is an affiliate of the American Library Association that seeks to promote the development and expansion of library collections, programs, and staff to be more inclusive to Spanish-speaking and Latino populations. South Huntington Public Library received REFORMA’s Judith Rivas Grant earlier this year. “Through this program, we want to make sure that our Latinx patrons feel welcomed into the library,” said SHPL head of programming and public relations, Catherine Schmoller. “We hope to promote cultural awareness in our community.” Call or visit the library to register.

- October 14, Long Island Writers Guild: Join other writers at Book Revue for its monthly writing workshop. With a pen, paper, and imagination, you will be all set to participate in this informal two-hour session. The workshop is free and open to all. The workshop begins at 7 PM; all levels and genres welcome.
- October 18, Town of Huntington 25th Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration: Join your community at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School for a night of musical performances, food, and celebration of Hispanic culture and history. Featuring keynote speaker Veronica Melgar, and Community Service Award recipient, Solange Rich.
