Singers Invited to Chapin ‘Cat’s in the Cradle’ Contest

Aspiring singers are invited to join in a contest that honoring the late Harry Chapin and his legendary song, “Cat’s in a Cradle.”

The contest opened Monday with a deadline of July 8. Winners will be announced July 12.

The winner of each category will be chosen to be play at one of three venues:

    • The Harry Chapin Tribute Concert on July 21 at the Chapin Stage at Heckscher Park
    • The Will Sing for Food Vineyard Jam at Clovis Vineyards on Aug. 3
    • Summer Jam, presented by the D’Addario Group on Aug. 15, venue to be determined

Winners will receive recognition across our social media platforms, published on the Long Island Cares Website and Youtube channel.

Contest categories are:

  • Student (Solo) 14yrs – 18yrs: Showcase your talent as a young solo artist.
  • Adult (Solo) 19yrs plus: Let your voice be heard as an adult solo performer.
  • Duet – 19yrs plus: Team up with a partner and harmonize your way to the top.

Chapin, a Huntington resident, and a philanthropist who made ending hunger a major focus of his time, wrote numerous folk rock and pop rock pieces that were chart toppers in the 1970s. He died in 1981 at age 38 after a car crash on the Long Island Expressway.
