Sorority Food Drive Donates Thousands of Items to TriCYA

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated®, Sigma Psi Omega chapter, Long Island, NY led by Dr. Michelle Richards, sponsored individual food drives the week before their first collective food donation to TriCYA-Huntington, which consisted of approximately 3,800 items.

The chapter will continue hosting the food drive to benefit TriCYA-Huntington for the remaining weeks of June 2020.

On June 23, Sigma Psi Omega Chapter is celebrating30 years of service to Long Island communities. It continues to serve communities throughout the county by conducting seminars for youth and their families regarding financial literacy, higher education, and nutrition to name a few initiatives. Further, the chapter feeds families in need of a home cooked meal, as well as, providing groceries.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is the first African-American sorority, it was founded by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle on Jan. 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. Lyle’s goal was to unite like-minded women to help give back to those in need.  Her vision continues, 112 years later.
