UPDATED: Street to Be Named for 9/11 Officer Mark J. Natale

The Town of Huntington will rename a street in honor of a New York City police officer who died in May of Sept.11-related cancer.

Officer Mark Natale

The dedication of Iceland Drive at Horton Drive in honor of Officer Mark J. Natale  will take place Friday at 11:30 a.m., on what would have been the officer’s 56th birthday.

After the ceremony, Officer Natale’s family is hosting a gathering on the block celebrating his life.

Natale helped frightened and dust-covered people fleeing the devastation over bridges to Brooklyn and onto ferries to New Jersey following the terror attacks on the World Trade Center.

UPDATE:  Iceland Drive will be closed from approximately 8am to 8pm between Edison Drive and Horton Drive for the ceremony and a gathering hosted by the Natale family. Residents will be able to enter and exit the closed portion of Iceland Drive from the northern intersection at Edison Drive.

He also stood guard at the gates around Ground Zero in the days that followed and worked in lower Manhattan for several months. Natale died of brain cancer at his South Huntington home on May 4.
