The Suffolk County Department of Health Services issued an advisory Friday against bathing at 64 beaches because of high bacteria counts resulting from heavy rain.
The advisory includes several Huntington beaches.
All the affected beaches are in areas heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds or adjacent tributaries and have limited tidal flushing.
The department recommends that bathing and other water contact be suspended in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles (at least a 24-hour period) after the rainfall ends.
This advisory will be lifted Saturday, at 9 p.m., unless sampling conducted by the department reveals elevated levels of bacteria persisting beyond the 24-hour period.
