Suffolk Legislature to Take Up Matinecock Court Project

The long-running battle over a large housing project in East Northport will come before the Suffolk County Legislature Tuesday, which will vote on funding infrastructure needs.

Matinecock Court, on 15 acres at the intersection of Elwood and Pulaski Roads, was first proposed in the 1970s. It calls for 146 units, 70 of which would be rentals, 76 of which would be home ownership. Most units will be categorized as affordable.

And while longstanding foes of the project are urging friends to prod Suffolk County legislators to vote against it, members of the Huntington Township Housing Coalition are being asked to mobilize in favor of it.

The Huntington Republican Committee wrote on Facebook, “The Northport-East Northport community has fought against this taxpayer-funded project, and the undue burden it would put on an already vulnerable school district, for decades and while it stalled for the past 7 years due to lack of funding, Suffolk County could actually provide that funding on Tuesday.”

The legislative meeting is set for 9:30 a.m. at the  Maxine S. Postal Auditorium, Evans K. Griffing Building, 300 Center Drive, Riverhead.
