US Rep. Thomas Suozzi was leading his two challengers in the Democratic primary Tuesday night, holding about half the votes that were counted.
However, because of a huge number of absentee ballots that still need to be counted, final results are not expected to be immediately known.
The two challengers who ran a spirited campaign against him, Melanie D’Arrigo and Michael Weinstock, were in second and third place, respectively.
Joe Biden had more than 60 percent of the vote for the Democratic nomination for president.
