Suozzi Looking for Veterans’ D-Day Stories

U.S. Tom Suozzi, D-Huntington, will join a bipartisan congressional delegation to mark the 75th anniversary of the Allied D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. Suozzi and the other of Congress will pay tribute and partake in ceremonies to honor those lost during the Battle of Normandy.

Suozzi is asking for stories from constituents to pay tribute to both those who lost their lives in the  Invasion, as well  those who survived it.

Codenamed Operation Overlord, the battle began on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day, when some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of Normandy, France.

“Seventy-five years later, our nation is still humbled by the bravery and sacrifice of those who participated in the landings on the beaches of Normandy. We continue to owe those heroes a debt which can never be paid,” Suozzi said. “This year’s anniversary will represent the last large gathering of D-Day veterans around the world. The youngest surviving D-Day veterans are now in their nineties. A few more years will find the last of them gone from us. I would like to mark this milestone by not only paying tribute to those lost, but by listening to the stories of the remaining survivors of the D-Day Invasion and the Battle of Normandy.”

Suozzi is reaching out to the community and asking anyone who knows a surviving sailor or soldier, to contact his veterans caseworker, Matt Geller at (631) 923-4100 or [email protected].
