U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi turned to social media several times Wednesday to describe what was happening as a pro-Trump crowd breached the U.S. Capitol building. A woman in the mob who was shot later died.
“We must get back to the House Floor and certify Joe Biden is the 46th President!,” Suozzi posted on Facebook at about 5:30 p.m.
The breach of the Capitol by hundreds of Trump rioters occurred as the Congress was counting the electoral votes from President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in November. The defeated President Trump had spoken to the crowd earlier in the day to repeat his claim that he had actually won the election but around 4:15 p.m., he posted a video telling people to “go home.”
Former congressman Steve Israel, a Huntington Democrat, said, “I never saw anything close to this in my time in Congress. Donald Trump has created one of America’s darkest days. If you supported him, it’s time to disavow him and those who are literally attacking our own Capitol. We are a better country than this.”
