Susan Lederer of Huntington Station Dies at Age 104

Susan (Kravitz) Lederer of Huntington Station died Oct. 1. She was 104 years old.

Born in Brooklyn in 1915, she attended P.S. 129 in Brooklyn where she won a classical music award and developed skills as a pianist and a singer. She also developed skills as an artist.

Susan and her husband, the late Jack Lederer, moved to Huntington in 1941, and in the 1950’s, she was a charter member of the Huntington Township Art League before it became the Art League of Long Island.

After moving to Long Island, she began painting in earnest, creating a multitude of landscapes and still-lifes, using various media, diverse themes. Although basically self-
taught, over the years, she studied painting technique with some of Long Island’s more renowned artists and instructors.

She was also a photographic coloring artist and did work for Republic Aviation, painting in colors for photos of their fighter jets.

For 17 years, she worked as the switchboard operator for the Huntington Union Free School District.

During the time that her two younger children attended Washington Elementary School in Huntington Station, she designed covers for the school newsletter, the “Washington
Profile.” Ceramic tiles and small ceramic sculptures were also a focus as she travelled all over Long Island seeking just the right tiles, just the right glaze, and just the right kilns
for finishing her work.

She painted in oil, watercolor, acrylic, with landscape or still-life themes. Upon occasion she would insert some people into her paintings, although she focused much more on the
nature scenes or scenes from everyday life. She rarely sold any of her artwork, but did enjoy giving way her paintings as gifts, especially to family and to people she admired, such as
Monsignor Joe Colligan from Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, attorney Arthur Goldstein, former Congressman Robert Mrazek, and Dr. Noah Finkel.

She was the mother of Kenneth (Yola), Thomas (Jeanne), and Nancy Sargent (Michael), grandmother of three and great-grandmother of three.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Susan’s name to: Huntington Hospital, 270 Park Ave., Huntington.
