Deadline Near for ‘Operation Graphic Hand’ Tax Exemption

Veterans of Operation Graphic Hand, instituted in March 1970 in response to a postal strike, may be eligible for a  tax exemption. The deadline is March 1.

“Suffolk County residents who qualify for this tax exemption can now apply until Friday, March 1, 2019, by submitting a completed Application for Alternative Veterans Exemption from real property taxation form, including a copy of the service member’s DD-214, to their Town’s Tax Assessor’s office,” Legislator Susan A. Berland said. “I urge all those who served in Operation Graphic Hand to apply for this well-earned benefit.  I was proud to sponsor this resolution and my office is available to assist anyone who is applying.”

Berland, D-Dix Hills, chairwoman of the Legislature’s Veterans Committee, sponsored IR 1768 A Local Law To Provide Property Tax Exemption For Certain Veterans Who Participated In Operation Graphic Hand, which passed unanimously through the full Legislature at the Nov. 20 general meeting.

Due to a postal worker strike in New York City, active duty and reserve service members facilitated mail delivery in the New York metropolitan area to avoid a national mail crisis.
