Teen, 13, Charged in Bias Assault at Whitman Mall

A Huntington Station teenager was arrested after he punched a Sikh teen and made biased comments, Suffolok County police said Friday.

During a dispute between two groups of juveniles at the Walt Whitman Shops on May 29, the  13-year-old male punched another 13-year-old male in the face and made biased comments. The victim was not injured. He reported that he was punched in the face.

Chaz Bedi, 13, of Syosset, said he and his friend were walking through Walt Whitman Shops  when they passed a large group of teenagers who made remarks about their dastars, or turbans, that Sikh men wear.

The teen was arrested at the Second Precinct Thursday at 9 p.m. and charged with Aggravated Harassment 2nd Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor and hate crime under New York State penal law.

He will be arraigned at Suffolk County Family Court at a later date.
