Thomas R. Cavanagh, Former Detective, Town Official

Thomas R. Cavanagh, a military veteran who had served as a Huntington official and a homicide detective, died Sunday at age 81.

The Northport resident had also served as vice chairman of the Huntington Democratic Party.

From 1987-1995, he served on the Kings Park School Board, becoming the board president for two years and trustee for six years. From 1992- 2021 he worked for the Town of Huntington, serving in several positions, including  director of General Services and deputy highway superintendent.

He and his late wife, Sandy, spent their retirement in New York and Florida.

He was the son of the late Raymond T. Cavanagh and Kathleen O’Connor Cavanagh. He was the father of Sean Cavanagh of Kings Park; Erik (Christina) Cavanagh of Smithtow and Ryan (Kaila) Cavanagh of Sandy Hook, Conn. He was stepfather of Richard (Allyson) Rosenberg, of Scarsdale,  and Laura Pomerantz of Centerport, brother of Patricia (Roger) Kowalski, Irene (Barry) Katz, Joseph, Raymond (Mary), Mary, and Kathleen, and grandfather of nine.

Friends and family may visit Thursday 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Nolan Funeral Home at 5 Laurel Ave, Northport.  Funeral Mass Friday 10 a.m. at St. Phillip Neri Church in Northport. Interment at St. Philip Neri Cemetery, East Northport.
