Thousands Gather in Greenlawn to Mourn NYPD Officer

NYPD Officer Anastasios Tsakos was mourned Tuesday by thousands of family, friends, police officers and others who gathered at St. Paraskevi Greek Church to bid him farewell.

The East Northport resident was killed last week by a woman later accused of drunken driving, as he directed traffic around another unrelated fatal accident. She faces 13 charges in his death.

He leaves two young children  and his wife, Irene.

His interment was at Northport Rural Cemetery.

The service was shown on Facebook, and was broadcast to the thousands gathered outside the church.

Officers from New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New Jersey were among those joining NYPD officers who lined Pulaski Road for the service. From around Long Island came Nassau and Suffolk police, sheriffs, village department officers, park and bay police and firefighters.

Hundreds of police and club motorcyclists turned out, as did NYPD mounted officers. Overhead, helicopters flew in formation.

After the service at the church ended, thousands of police officers headed back to their vehicles that were parked on side or other primary streets, from Oswego to Clay Pitts, to Stony Hollow and  well beyond. Manor Road was quickly filled by police vehicles of all shapes and sizes returning to their precincts in the city.

Officials attending the service included New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio, former US Rep. Peter King, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk Legislator Susan Berland.
