Thousands Without Power in Huntington; LIRR Service Restored

Hundreds of thousands of Long Island residents are without power Wednesday after Tropical Storm Isaias blew across the area, uprooting trees, closing roads, and suspending LIRR service.

In the Town of Huntington, PSEG-LI said that 37,542 customers, or more than 46 percent of total customers, had lost power, with an estimated restoration time of 3 a.m. Friday.

PSEG-LI said that as of 9 a.m. Wednesday morning,  more than 300,000 people had no power. The utility acknowledged numerous problems with its communication system. And it said restoration of full service could take as long as a week.

“The storm affected communications systems, creating challenges in getting information to our customers. PSEG Long Island is reliant on Verizon for its internet and telecommunications systems. Without reliable support from Verizon, our systems cannot perform as they should. PSEG Long Island is actively working with Verizon to address this issue, and PSEG and LIPA have asked the DPS for assistance,” the utility said.

Many residents reported problems with cellphone service and the failure of apps designed to allow them to report power outages or receive notifications. Others said emails were taking hours to arrive or that they could not make calls.

Service was restored Wednesday morning on the Port Jefferson/Huntington line with the 8:55 a.m. westbound train. LIRR service was suspended overnight on several lines because of hazards caused by the storm.
