Touch a Truck Draws Kids for a Good Cause

Trucks, police cars, payloaders, motorcycles, buses and other vehicles drew youngsters Sunday to a touch-a-truck event to benefit Long Island Cares.

Sponsored by WBAB and WBLI radio stations, the event in the parking lot of Walt Whitman Shops in Huntington Station was quiet for the first hour to accommodate those with sensitivities to noise, with only a few horns sounding.

Representatives of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Troopers, Suffolk County Police Department, Melville Fire Department, Homeland Security, the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control and other agencies displayed equipment and invited youngsters on short tours of their vehicles or to learn about safety. Several food vendors, the New York College of Health Professions, NICE bus company and others were on hand.

Families also brought non-perishable food items to donate to Long Island Cares.
