Town Board Waives Dog Ban for Festival

The Huntington Town Board recently took the following actions:

* Temporarily waived the prohibition against dogs in Heckscher Park during the Long Island Fall Festival to allow animal shelters and rescue organizations to promote their mission and encourage adoption at the festival, which runs from Friday, Oct. 5 through Monday, Oct. 8. Long Island Fall Festival hours are 5 to 11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6-7; and from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8. The carnival and vendors booths close at 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

* Appointed and reappointed commissioners to the Huntington Housing Authority: Kevin Lyons, appointed to a term expiring June 22, 2019; James McGoldrick, appointed to a term expiring June 22, 2022; and Barry Lites,  reappointed to a term expiring June 22, 2023.

* Set public hearings for the 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, board meeting:
— To consider authorizing various actions be taken upon blighted properties.
— To consider amending the Town Code, Chapter 109 (Firearms) to be consistent with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Law, to allow farmers to obtain DEC-issued Deer Damage Permits outside of deer hunting season in regards to damaged crops. The current language bars the DEC from issuing Deer Damage Permits outside of deer hunting season, which has compromised the livelihoods of resident farmers whose crops have been destroyed, an issue related to the overpopulation of deer.

* Set 7 p.m. as the starting time of its Oct. 23 meeting.
