 Recycling Center Renamed

Huntington’s town recycling center was renamed in honor of Ernesto “Ernie” Chea Monday.

Chea, who died in 2020, had been the supervisor of the center since 2009, and had worked for the town for 26 years.

Officials, friends and family gathered Monday to unveil the sign for the Ernesto Modesto Chea Recycling Center, at 641 New York Ave., Huntington.

“I believe it is a fitting tribute to rename the Huntington Recycling Center in dedication to former Recycling Operations Supervisor Ernie Chea as a tribute to his dedication and service to the people of Huntington. “, Councilman Eugene Cook, who sponsored the resolution  to rename the center, said.  “Ernie was a man who embodied the American Dream, an immigrant that fled Cuba as a child with his family, he was quick to help anyone in need.  Ernie went out of his way, to take the time to talk with every visitor at the recycling center, ran tours to educate Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts on the importance of recycling, help and support his coworkers, all the while being a wonderful family man and neighbor.  Ernie will be sorely missed, not only by his wife Stacey, children Hayley and Dalton, family and friends, but all that met him, as he always made you feel like a lifelong friend.”
