To promote sustainable and green transportation, the Town of Huntington launched a new bike-sharing program Wednesday with PedalShare as part of the Suffolk County Bike Share Program.
After a difficult year of dealing with the pandemic, Town Supervisor Chad Lupinacci said he hopes the new program will get Huntington residents active again, just in time for the summer.
“I think it’s very important in terms of it being a very fun way of transportation, but also encouraging people to be exercise conscious and being able to move about the town very safely,” Lupinacci said. “It provides a very easy mode of transportation for people of all ages.”
In order to access the bikes, residents must first download the Bloom Bike and Scooter Sharing applications onto their phones and scan the QR code located between the handlebars to unlock the bike.
When done with the trip, the bike can be parked in any space at the PedalShare, Bethpage Ride location, or around downtown Huntington.
“It’s a great program and a fun way to travel and I encourage everyone to download the app, try it out and see if it works for you,” Councilman Ed Smyth said.
The hourly trips cost $4 per hour or $35 for the day. Residents can also pay for the bikes annually.
The program is sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union.
The bicycles have been installed at four sites:
- Halesite: Mill Dam Park
- Huntington: Heckscher Park
- Huntington Village: Gerard Street Parking Lot
- Huntington Village: New Street Parking Lot
A fifth is planned for Huntington Station at Paul H. Johnson, Sr. Gateway Plaza.
